2025 AI-Driven Metagenomic Diagnostics for Rapid Identification of Emerging Microbial Pathogens in Clinical Samples European Journal of Theoretical and Applied Sciences
Emerging microbial pathogens represent an evolving global public health threat. In-depth genomic characterisation is critical for pathogen tracing, developing countermeasures, and informed therapeutic decision-making. Rapid identification prevents unnecessary empirical antimicrobial administration in the interval before culture or qPCR results. Such early detection also facilitates infection prevention and control measures, guiding targeted isolate testing. Deploying a metagenomics sequencing approach enables simultaneous identification of multiple pathogens from the same analytical run. Direct- on sequencing data, including genomic access to subpopulations such as plasmids, contributes to characterising outbreak strains. Tracking high-risk pathogens—those that, through gene gain or loss, are predicted to acquire epidemic potential—constitutes an additional focus. Rapid detection methods are thus vital for both new and known pathogens. Singapore Health Services and the Agency for Science, Technology and Research Public Health Preparedness Programme in 2019 established a partnership to explore rapid identification of emerging pathogens. Novel DNA- and RNA- targeted workflows directly sought to identify each candidate pathogen.
