Energy systems are shifting toward more reliable and efficient infrastructures to supply their consumers with minimum operation costs along with optimal technical and environmental conditions. These objectives can be achieved by adopting advanced technologies and smart solutions; however, new challenges, particularly regarding information security and interoperability, will emerge that must be addressed. This chapter focuses on smart power systems and provides a comprehensive overview of the leading technical topics to suggest a roadmap for future studies. In this context, an introduction to the history of smart grids is presented in the first section. In the following, the main components of smart grids, including advanced infrastructures, communication networks, and standards, as well as energy sources, are reviewed.
